Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

A detailed interdisciplinary study of the role of mythology within a particular culture or tradition. Breadth-Humanities.

COURSE DETAILS:

The Odyssey and its Tragic Prequels

The Homeric epics set the narrative framework around which the Athenian writers of tragedies told their stories, several of which are set between the events of the Iliad and the Odyssey. These include the suicide of Ajax, the re-recruitment of Philoctetes, the capture of the Trojan women, and the return home and murder of Agamemnon. After closely reviewing the text of the Odyssey, we shall examine how the tragedians adapted their prequels to respond to this framework.
