Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

A study of French and Francophone literature from an interdisciplinary point of view. Topics will vary to include different disciplines: history, cultural studies, gender studies or the study of the relationships between literature and other arts.

COURSE DETAILS:

À l’exemple de trois héroïnes du roman du XIXe siècle, le cours examinera de plus près la représentation de l’héroïne dans le roman, ainsi que sa transposition dans la musique et le film. En prenant notre point de départ dans les nouvelles de Maupassant, nous allons bâtir notre analyse sur une révision rapide des éléments importants pour l’analyse littéraire avant de nous plonger plus en détail dans les trois romans au programme. Les étudiant.e.s utiliseront les techniques apprises d’abord dans des analyses littéraires simples, ensuite comparatives en utilisant des films (Flaubert, Madame Bovary) et des mises en musique (Mérimée, Carmen) pour faire ressortir l’approche particulière de la littérature. Du roman de mœurs, en passant par le roman sentimental, par l’influence du l’orientalisme, en route vers le roman réaliste, les questions tourneront autour du rôle et de la représentation de la femme, du reflet de la société et du contexte historique dans les œuvres au programme.

Les nouvelles de Maupassant seront distribuées en format électronique et via Canvas. Les étudiants doivent par ailleurs visualiser en dehors des heures de cours deux films ayant été réalisés sur deux des romans étudiés en cours : Madame Bovary (Claude Chabrol, 1991); Carmen (opéra de G. Bizet; en ligne).
