CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Explores health from a holistic perspective, in which health is viewed as physical, psychological, and social well-being. Considers genetics, environment, personal health behaviors (such as diet, exercise, stress management, and drug use), socioeconomic status, health care delivery systems, and aging with the intent to improve students' abilities to evaluate health information. Breadth-Science.

COURSE DETAILS:

This breadth science course aims to:

•     examine health from a holistic perspective, in which health is viewed as the product of physical, psychological, and social well-being;

•     raise awareness of the role of personal behaviours (e.g. diet, exercise, stress management, and drug use) in one's health status;

•     improve students' abilities to evaluate health information.

A variety of factors that influence health will be considered, including nutrition, physical activity, hygiene, drugs, intimate relationships and sexuality, socioeconomic status, health care, and aging.                   


Through lecture videos, reading, discussion and writing assignments, students will gain an appreciation for topics related to the following areas of heath:

 

•     Health and Heath Care Delivery Systems

•     Infectious Disease

•     Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes

•     Physical Activity

•     Body Weight and Weight Management

•     Mental Health

•     Drugs and Alcohol

•     Human Sexuality

•     Sexually Transmitted Infections

•     Pregnancy and Childbirth

•     Fertility Management

•     Environment and Climate

NOTES:

The Midterm and Final Exam for this course are In Person. No alternate arrangements regarding timing or format will be made.
