Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

3-phase circuits, power quality, and transformers, Characteristic of power semiconductor devices, Line frequency controlled rectifiers, Buck, boost, and buck-boost dc-dc power converters, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques, Voltage source inverters and full-bridge topology, Introduction to dc machines, Introduction to stepper motors, Introduction to induction motors, Introduction to synchronous machines. Students with credit for SEE 331 may not take MSE 353 for further credit.

  • Introduction to DC-DC converters, Operation and Modes
  • Review of Transformers
  • Isolated DC-DC Converters
  • AC-DC converters:  design, line frequency rectification and smoothing
  • Review of Three-Phase AC Power
  • DC-AC Inverters
  • PWM and SVM
  • DC Machines and Drives
  • Brushless DC (BLDC) drives
  • Induction Motor drives (Three Phase Inverter drives only)

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

An understanding of essential material in electrical power for Mechatronics Engineers, with a focus on Robotics, Transport, Manufacturing Industry and Extraction Industry.

  • Exercises and Designs - Laboratory/Simulation-based Reports 25%

  • Final Exam (F2F and Remote) 30%

REQUIREMENTS:

There will be five 'Labs' based on in person Experiments followed by design and simulation. These will be conducted in groups of  2 or max 3.  Two such groups may share simulations and designs, to be noted on the reports.  All members of such groups and pairs of groups if wanted should be in the same Lab Section, to ensure the same shared introduction
to the lab, guidance, and TA help, which is available in those sessions.

MUR: Mohan, Undeland and Robins, Power Electronics 3rd Edn, Wiley (Covers most of the course material in great depth)

M-Intro; Mohan, Power Electronics a First Course, Wiley (A good text to compliment the lectures, but misses some topics which are in a second book).
