The Screens 1993

An early collaboration with Marc Diamond (writer) and Penelope Stella (director). Based upon Jean Genet's play, this production featured fantastic costumes and brilliant sets. The music was performed live by an ensemble consisting of Donna Zapf (clarinet), John Collins (guitar), Andreas Kahre (percussion), Eric Brown (bass) and myself on guitar, keyboards and a simple computer system. I offer two pieces here: the original sketch used to set the tone for the work and a recording of the overture from the premiere. The double reed instrument is an FM patch played by keyboard.

In planning the music for this production, I imagined the house band at the Giza All Star Lounge - a run-down bar, off the beaten track and a little too far from the pyramids for the tourists. We only wore the fezs during the run of the play. John left the band after this gig. Eric, Andreas, Donna and I continued to play on a semi-regular basis. The current Giza All Stars features Kenneth Newby on violin. Donna, having moved away is currently an ex-officio member.
