PRODUCTION Script Draft You are standing on cracked, grass tufted concrete. You are unsure how you arrived here. Several crumbling buildings stand in front of you. They appear to be the decaying remains of a 1950’s era small town. Some have completely collapsed, but looking closer you notice that some are still structurally sound enough to enter: a hospital, a theater, a small home, among others. Distant strains of a haunting melody crackle in your ear. The sky is overcast. Turning slowly around, you find the land barren and devoid of activity. You catch a glimpse of something floating near the horizon, beyond the clouds. But at this distance it would have to be … huge. You feel uneasy; as though you’re being watched. It might be better to try to figure out what’s going on from inside one of the buildings. Our team has decided to build an immersive environment. In this environment the user is free to explore a strange, deserted town surrounded by desolation. Some of the inspiration will be from "steam punk". There may not be any other character, but it may be hinted that other beings are also living in this area. The user plays a character who is as unaware of what is happening as they are, perhaps introduced in a short intro movie where they wake up from a coma in a hospital to find the world changed around them. It is unclear why the world has changed, and if they are curious it is up to the user to find clues. There is no goal other than personal exploration and discovery; no real beginning or end. There is just the user and their perpetual loneliness. The actual story behind the environment is still up for discussion, but so far it’s something like a post-war or post-apocalyptic landscape. Perhaps it is in the future, and the fuel crisis has been the downfall of mankind, or maybe it’s an alternate past, where robots were invented earlier and they rose up against their masters who had to resort to older technologies, like steam power, to survive. The environment will be presented in Flash, with the user able to look around to a limited extent and click on hotpoints of interest. The hotpoints will either lead to a new area to explore, or have an interaction. For example, the user may pick up a discarded newspaper to gain insight, enter a door, or peer in a window. The presentation style will be semi-realistic, with many techniques used to render the environment such as photography/photoediting, live action film, 3D rendering, 3D animation, 2D animation, visual effects (AfterEffects), and atmospheric music and sound effects. Some of sub-environments may be rendered in slightly varying styles. For example, a hospital may be presented in a more painterly fashion if it affords a different mood than another location.
