New Training Program for Shelters

January 07, 2020

Calgary advocate, Hilary Chapple, speaks live on air with Doug Dirks and Jenny Howe about developing a new training program to make shelters safer and more inclusive for members of the LGBTQ community.

Hilary Chapple, an advocate and member of the LGBTQ community who has lived experience with homelessness, talks about the development of a new training program that will teach shelters how to be more inclusive.

Two shelters in the Calgary area have already gotten on board with the training which will instruct shelters to ask about pronouns on intake assessments, hire more staff who are part of the LGBTQ community, create welcoming environments with more visible Pride flags and safe space indicators, display LGBTQ-friendly events on community boards to combat isolation, and create lived experience committees that will help inform policy and agency practices.
