Abstract

Background

Social integration is a key determinant of health and wellbeing in later life. Yet, little is known about how older adults who are homeless or housing precarious navigate social integration within their housing environments.

Methods

This study employed a mixed-method, community-engaged approach. Semi-structured life-course interviews and photovoice sessions were conducted with 20 older adults residing in independent housing with onsite support. We further collaborated with three participants to co-create a digital storytelling piece that wove together imagery and focused narrative interviews.

Results

Participants explained that both the built and natural environment shaped their opportunities for social integration. Communal areas like lounges and shared outdoor spaces and access to nearby nature created settings that supported connection, wellbeing and a sense of aging in the right place. They also highlighted the importance of relationships with other residents and supportive staff, which provided emotional reassurance, practical help and a sense of safety. Together, the physical environment and social relationships played a central role in promoting meaningful integration within their housing environments

Discussion

This study highlights how older adults build community and connections within their housing environments and underscores the need for housing models that support diverse forms of social integration. It offersinsight into how those with lived experience of housing precarity and homelessness construct and experience social integration, and demonstrates the value of digital storytelling in centering participants’ own narratives.
