Advisory Board
The Chang Institute Advisory Board was established in 2026 to provide strategic guidance as the Institute enters its second decade. Comprising academics, entrepreneurs, industry leaders and representatives from across SFU’s faculties, the Board supports the Institute’s vision, champions its impact and helps connect its work to the broader innovation ecosystem. The Board is chaired by Dr. Sarah Lubik, Academic Director of the Chang Institute.

Dr. Sarah Lubik
Academic Director, Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship, SFU
Sarah Lubik is SFU’s first Director of Entrepreneurship, and Academic Director of the Chang Institute. A senior lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at SFU’s Beedie School of Business, she also serves as National Academic Director for SFU’s i2I Research & Innovation Institute. Sarah is a published researcher in university entrepreneurship, science commercialization and innovation ecosystems, and has twice been appointed by the Government of Canada to advise on national innovation policy. She also co-founded a high-tech startup, serves on boards leveraging the entrepreneurial mindset to address societal challenges, and holds a BBA (Honours) from SFU and an MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge.

Charles Chang
President & Founder, Lyra Growth Partners
Charles Chang is a serial entrepreneur and SFU Beedie alumnus whose transformative $10M gift established the Chang Institute in 2016. He is the founder of Lyra Growth Partners, a growth equity firm that provides capital and brand-savvy coaching to emerging consumer brands. Previously, Charles founded Vega, which he built from his basement into a leading plant-based nutrition brand sold in over 20,000 stores before leading its sale to WhiteWave Foods for US$550 million in 2015. He is also co-founder of PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs, a charity that helps elementary school students develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

Former CEO, InBC Investment Corp.
Jill Earthy is a seasoned executive and governance leader with a strong track record across the public, private and non-profit sectors. As the inaugural CEO of InBC Investment Corp., she led B.C.'s provincial Crown investment corporation and its $500-million strategic fund, championing inclusive economic growth with a triple-bottom-line mandate. Jill has held leadership positions at WeBC (formerly Women's Enterprise Centre), Female Funders and FrontFundr, and has built and sold two national companies. She serves on the SFU Beedie School of Business Advisory Board.

Matias Marquez
CEO, ethos
Matias Marquez is the CEO of ethos, a leading loyalty platform for Shopify brands. He previously founded and led Buyatab Online through its acquisition by SVS, a subsidiary of Corpay Technologies (NYSE: CPAY), in 2019. He is an active advisor and investor in early stage technology companies and serves as a board member of PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs. A CFA charterholder, two-time Forty Under 40 honoree, and EY Entrepreneur of the Year winner, Matias is a Chang Institute alumnus and serves on the Beedie School of Business Advisory Board.

Sumreen Rattan
Co-Founder & COO, Moment Energy
Sumreen Rattan is the co-founder and COO of Moment Energy, North America’s leading EV battery repurposing company. She holds a BASc in Mechatronics Systems Engineering from SFU and came up through the Chang Institute’s TechE@SFU program and entrepreneurship co-op (eCo-op). Since co-founding the company, Sumreen has helped grow Moment Energy to over 75 employees and secured more than $100 million in funding. Sumreen was a 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 honouree and was recognized as a 2026 YWCA Woman of Distinction for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Dr. Marvin Washington
Dean, SFU Beedie School of Business
Marvin Washington is Dean of SFU's Beedie School of Business and a self-described "pracademic." The author of three books on leadership, strategy and organizational change, he has spent over 25 years consulting with organizations ranging from Parkland Fuels and Syncrude to the Government of Alberta and the Country of Botswana on leadership, organizational change and equity. Prior to joining SFU in October 2025, he held senior academic leadership roles at the University of Alberta and Portland State University. Marvin earned his PhD from Northwestern in Organizational Behavior and Sociology. Prior to that Marvin obtained his Undergraduate Degree in Industrial Engineering and worked in Manufacturing with Procter and Gamble.

Andrew Harries
Innovation & Entrepreneurship Area Coordinator, SFU Beedie
Andrew Harries is the Tom Foord Associate Professor of Practice in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at SFU Beedie, where he blends entrepreneurial theory and practice in courses on innovation, entrepreneurship, product management and building new ventures. Andrew is also business advisor, corporate director and serial tech entrepreneur. He is a co-founder of Sierra Wireless and past chair of both the Beedie School of Business Dean’s Advisory Board and Science World. A former recipient of EY's Entrepreneur of the Year award, in 2023 Andrew was inducted into the BC Tech Innovators Hall of Fame.

Dr. Michael Sjoerdsma, P.Eng.
Associate Dean, Academic, SFU Faculty of Applied Sciences
Michael Sjoerdsma is a University Lecturer in Engineering Science and Associate Dean, Academic in SFU’s Faculty of Applied Sciences. He holds a BASc, MASc and EdD from SFU. A two-time president of the SFU Faculty Association, he has served as Acting Director of the School of Engineering Science and brings extensive experience in faculty governance, technical writing pedagogy and engineering education.

Dr. Dai Heide
Associate Dean, Learning & Teaching, and Student Experience, SFU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Dai Heide is a University Lecturer in Philosophy and Associate Dean of Learning, Teaching and Student Experience in SFU’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from Ohio State University and a BA from Northwestern University. His research focuses on Kant’s metaphysics and epistemology, and he leads and represents FASS in teaching and learning initiatives at the faculty and university level.

Dr. Sarah D. Johnson
Associate Dean, Learning, SFU Faculty of Science
Sarah D. Johnson is a University Lecturer in Physics and Associate Dean, Learning in SFU’s Faculty of Science. She is a recipient of the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s most prestigious recognition of contributions to post-secondary education. Sarah founded SFU’s Science and Math Peer Academic Support Program and the Girls Exploring Physics workshop series, and serves on the Women+ in Physics Canada Steering Committee.
