Decolonization and Indigenization
Learning with respect
The Department of History at Simon Fraser University (SFU) works to decolonize and Indigenize how we teach, learn, research and build community. We recognize that history as a discipline has often centred colonial structures, Western knowledge systems, and uneven power relationships. Our work asks how we can challenge those patterns and create more respectful, inclusive spaces for students, faculty and staff.
Since 2021, our Decolonization and Indigenization Working Group has guided this work through research, consultation and action. The group’s 2022 report, The Way Forward, set out 25 Calls to Action for the department, and recent progress includes curriculum review, the Decolonization and Indigenization Resource Centre in AQ 6217, department events and collaboration across SFU.
We know this work will continue to grow. We remain committed to listening, learning and acting with care as we support Indigenous knowledge and voices in the study of history.

Teaching and Curriculum
Reviewing courses, descriptions and learning materials to better reflect Indigenous histories, voices and knowledge.
Relationships and Community
Creating opportunities for dialogue, learning and connection within the department and across SFU.
Spaces and resources
Developing AQ 6217 as the Decolonization and Indigenization Resource Centre.
Recent progress:
- Reviewed course titles and descriptions
- Continued to develop the AQ 6217 Resource Centre
- Added new signage, books and artwork
- Hosted a Sacred Burning for department members
- Shared DIWG work through SFU and FASS gatherings
- Continued conversations about curriculum change
