SFU NAMED ONE OF CANADA'S TOP EMPLOYERS FOR 2022

Generous maternity and parental leave top-up payments and a defined benefit pension plan are among the reasons that SFU was again named one of Canada’s top 100 employers for 2022.

 

INAUGURAL UGGLA FAMILY SCHOLARS COHORT BEGIN THEIR SFU JOURNEY

Last year we announced that Lance Uggla and his family committed $34.1 million to support exceptional undergraduates at SFU, and the first cohort is finally here. Learn more about this unprecedented scholarship and the secrets to success that Lance shared with the scholars. 

 

COUNSELLING WITH CARE TO HEAL INDIGENOUS TRAUMA

Counselling psychology professor and practitioner Alanaise Goodwill brings Indigenous approaches to well-being into her teaching and research. With this integrated approach, she is decolonizing course content and broadening the counselling field to include Indigenous ways of healing.

 

What impact does technology have on our economy and environment? Third-year students from SFU’s School of Sustainable Energy Engineering apply energy systems modelling to understand the ecological, economic and environmental impact their technology may have on current and future infrastructure.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION FOR TWO ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT SEARCHES

Executive searches will be conducted this fall for SFU’s next Associate Vice-President, Research and our first Associate Vice-President, Knowledge Mobilization and Innovation. The SFU community is invited to provide feedback on the roles by email, online survey or attending a hybrid open forum.

You are encouraged to participate in this important process and share the qualities, attributes and experience you feel the successful candidate should possess. Your valuable feedback will help to shape the position description and candidate profile, which will be used to recruit and evaluate candidates.

 

A GONDOLA IS GOOD FOR SFU AND GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

More than 25,000 daily trips are made by students, staff, faculty and residents to Burnaby Mountain, creating traffic noise, pollution and congestion. The Burnaby Mountain Gondola would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,700 tonnes per year. Show your support and help bring a gondola to SFU.

 

Participate in the Student Experience of Teaching and Courses consultation to make surveys a better tool for understanding student learning experiences. Share your ideas at an online info-gathering session on Friday, November 19.

An upgrade to goSFU will be performed on Monday, December 6. After the upgrade, goSFU users will benefit from a modern navigation framework, along with an overall improved user experience. To accommodate these changes, there will be a goSFU outage from 12:00 pm on Friday, December 3, to 12:00 pm on Monday, December 6.

An idea to build an app incentivizing the use of disposable cups won the $3,000 Grand Prize Award in the 2020-21 Student Community Engagement Competition.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AT SFU

This week, SFU observes the International Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20) and Trans Awareness Week (November 13-19). We celebrate the transgender community at SFU and encourage allies to continue learning about transgender students’ experiences in higher education and building trans-inclusive communities.

You are invited to join the Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil, in person or online, to remember the lives lost to transphobic violence and support the trans community.

HOPE IN RESISTANCE: STORIES OF CLIMATE JUSTICE

On the heels of COP26, climate justice advocates Melina Laboucan-Massimo, Anjali Appadurai and Naisha Khan will discuss the necessity of hope and joy in fighting the climate crisis.

As they share stories of communities defending their land, water and climate within Canada and worldwide, attendees will learn tangible actions to make a just transition to a more equitable and sustainable future for everyone.

SFU Men’s Basketball has its first two home games in 20 months, on Friday, November 19 (7 pm) vs Central Washington and Saturday, November 20 (7:30 pm) vs cross-town rival UBC. Free admission and parking in West Mall for SFU staff and students.

November 23

Scott White, editor-in-chief of The Conversation Canada, will present a workshop for SFU faculty and communicators. Discover tips for crafting journalistic articles, identifying story ideas and developing strong op-ed story pitches for submission.
