ALERT: URGENT SCHEDULED POWER OUTAGE ON BURNABY CAMPUS DEC. 22

On Wednesday, Dec. 22nd, the power will be shut off at the majority of Burnaby campus buildings between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. This scheduled power outage is required to address recent snow-related damage to critical BC Hydro power lines. All affected buildings will be closed to in-person university services and campus activities during this time.

If you are impacted by this power outage, please connect with your supervisor about making arrangements to work remotely. Learn more about the outage and steps you can take to prepare on the Faculty and Staff Dashboard.

SFU COMMUNITY RALLIES TO SUPPORT B.C. FLOOD RELIEF

This fall, groups from across the university came together to create a Food, Toiletries and Toy Drive in support of B.C. communities affected by recent flooding events.

Thanks to the generosity of the SFU community and partners, over 2,442 items—including toiletries, non-perishable food items, toys and clothes—were collected, along with approximately $26,000 in cash donations.

We are so grateful to every member of our community that stepped up to provide this essential support in a time of great need.

MEET THE FAMILIES OF SFU

As the days get shorter and 2021 comes to a close, SFU faculty and staff are getting ready to spend some quality time with families and loved ones during the holiday season. Meet some of the families and discover how they spend their winter breaks.

SFU's Department of Chemistry built a chemistry-themed Christmas tree or "chemistree" as part of an annual holiday tradition.

Led by Lucas Clarke and Abbegaile (Abby) Sonon, this 7-foot tree made of glassware, lab equipment and miscellaneous materials for decoration took two days to construct.

An innovative housing solution is pairing SFU students who need affordable housing with older adults looking for companionship and help with household tasks.

Siobhan Ennis, an SFU Health Sciences student, moved in with retired SFU physics professor Michael Wortis. Learn about the pair's new friendship.

SEASONAL UNIVERSITY CLOSURE

Please note that the university will be closed from Saturday, December 25 through to Monday, January 3 inclusive. All campuses will reopen on Tuesday, January 4.

The next edition of the What's On newsletter will be delivered to you on Thursday, January 6. We wish everyone a safe and restful winter break.

WE'RE STILL HERE FOR YOU OVER THE HOLIDAYS

Caring for your health and well-being is important. Available any time of the year, the SFU Employee and Family Assistance Program is here to provide you with confidential and professional assistance. SFU is actively engaged in promoting a supportive and healthy work environment for every employee and provides many resources to support you.

Phishing scams increase around the holidays because our behaviour changes in predictable ways, such as expecting a package or hoping that someone we haven’t spoken to in years is trying to connect with us.

Learn how to identify and avoid these attempts by following these savvy tips.

SFU community members are encouraged to reduce energy consumption on and off-campus by turning down the thermostat to below 20°C, not using electric heaters on campus, and layering up in warmer clothing.

For more tips, visit the Safety & Risk Services webpage.

It's true, every little bit counts! Not everyone can donate large sums of money at once, however, every donation adds up. For instance, if 10 people each give $100, that's enough to generate a meaningful award for an SFU student in financial need. Please consider making a difference in your community—and getting the advantage of a 2021 tax receipt—by making your gift online by Friday, December 31

SFU may take a winter break, but that doesn’t mean we’re fully closed. Check out this list of the essential services and campus access points available to those who need them.

It may be quieter over winter break, but there are still options when you need to grab a bite. Here are some spots you'll find open on Burnaby Mountain over the holidays.
