SFU staff member recognized for her long-standing community service

SFU alumnus and Beedie staff member Zahra Hawili has been awarded a Staff Achievement Award in the community engagement category for her life-long commitment to volunteer work. Hawili, who began volunteering in grade 7 as an outlet, says it has become an important part of her life and identity.

2021 Global Report Ranks Canada 15th Happiest Country

This year's World Happiness Report focuses on the effects of COVID-19 and how people all over the globe have fared. SFU Psychology's Lara Aknin, who worked on this year’s report as an associate editor, says despite the challenges of 2020 there are some bright spots.

Museum of Vancouver's latest exhibition goes digital with the help of SFU's masters of digital media students

The Museum of Vancouver's newest exhibtion, A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia, traces the stories, struggles and experiences of Chinese-Canadians immigrants to B.C. Students of the Masters of Digital Media program, offered through a unique four-way partnership between SFU, UBC, BCIT and Emily Carr, were tasked with translating the history and experiences of Chinese-Canadian immigrants into interactive and immersive learning opportunities.

Three SFU leaders nominated for YWCA Women of Distinction Awards

SFU congratulates June Francis, Stephanie Simmons and Tammara Soma on their YWCA Women of Distinction nominations. The awards celebrate women in the Metro Vancouver area who are making a difference through their research and initiatives. The winners will be announced June 7, 2021.

Operational Updates

Multi-Factor Authentication Required for all staff/faculty

On May 31, multi-factor authentication (MFA) will be required for all faculty and staff. If you are not already enrolled, you will start to see a friendly reminder while logging in to SFU services (i.e. email, Zoom, etc.) to provide better online protection.

Last Chance to apply for SFU's EDI Advisory Council

Applications are still being welcomed from faculty, staff and students who would like to join SFU’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Advisory Council. If you’re interested in providing guidance on how to strengthen SFU’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace, learning environments and equitable opportunities for all, please apply by Friday, March 26.

Sustainability Advisory Council: Call for Expressions of Interest

SFU's new Sustainability Advisory Council will govern, provide direction and make critical decisions on SFU's current and future climate action efforts. Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to submit an application by March 30.

Equity and Diversity Are New Assessment Aspects for Accreditation Process

When SFU reaffirms its Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) accreditation status in 2023, we'll have a new priority to be assessed on — equity and diversity — in addition to our existing core themes: engaging students, research and communities. SFU is the first Canadian university to be accredited (2015) and the NWCCU evaluates the quality and institutional effectiveness of more than 160 post-secondary institutions.

Deadline Extended: Students can earn $1000 with their Work-Integrated Learning Experiences

Do you know a student who is currently registered in a Spring 2021 course or program that has a work-integrated learning component? Students can apply for a grant and a professional development opportunity valued at $1000. Encourage them to apply ASAP.

Hear from representatives of Indigenous communities and leaders including Denise Williams (CEO of First Nations Technology Council) about how Canada can accelerate a clearer path toward meaningful digital inclusion.
