PRIDE MONTH: SHARING STORIES OF RESILIENCY AND SUCCESS

Faculty of Health Sciences professor Travis Salway and community-based health research collaborative, 2SLGBTQ+ Roundtable, gathered virtually to discuss stories of resiliency and success in health services during the COVID-19 pandemic. These amazing leaders also gave thoughtful advice to cisgendered heterosexual allies about what can be done to support the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

CONVOCATION MEDALIST DOESN'T LET CHALLENGES LIMIT POSSIBILITIES

Being awarded the top honour of a dean’s convocation medal is an incredible achievement — and one that Alexandra Patzak accomplished for her unique experience as a student with a visual impairment. Read about her inspiring journey and hopes for future learners.

STRENGTHENING SCHOOL SPIRIT

Peter Lisiecki embodies the “spirit of SFU” every day through his work at the SFU Bookstore and Spirit Shop. From spirit wear to sustainability, Peter attends events, builds connections and forges relationships with students, staff and faculty to bolster the sense of pride we have in our institution, work and community.

Megan Monkman graduated last year after enduring a mental health crisis. Now, thanks to Megan's generosity and efforts, other SFU students who experience significant mental health challenges and are persevering to continue their studies can apply for a new award. Community members can contribute to the Megan L. Monkman Courage to Persevere Award and help reach the goal of $20,000.

SFU Health Sciences professor Ralph Pantophlet specializes in antibody research of viruses such as HIV-1, influenza, HCMV and SARS-CoV-2, with the goal of developing vaccine strategies to protect against them. His pursuit of an HIV vaccine is contributing to the global understanding of this and other viral pathogens.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

ALL UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES WILL BE CLOSED JULY 1ST

We hope you enjoy a safe and restful day off. While some people are looking forward to Canada Day, others are wishing to not observe a celebration of Canada’s colonial history. We encourage you to take time to learn more about the history of the Indigenous Peoples whose land Canada occupies, colonization and residential schools. This is also an opportunity to reflect on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action and commit to reconciliation personally and professionally, if you haven’t already.

TIPS TO BEAT THE HEAT

A heat wave warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver until at least June 30, 2021. Here are some tips to help manage the heat and reduce your personal health risk:

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water
  • Work in the coolest part of your home
  • If possible, work during the cooler times of the day — discuss options with your supervisor
  • Turn off unused appliances to help keep indoor air temperatures down
  • Avoid using laptops in your lap

IT Services will be performing planned network equipment replacement on Saturday, July 3, 2021, from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. There will be no on-campus access to the internet from SFU wired or wireless connections during the outage window. There will also be no access to SFU online services from off-campus connections.

THE NEWSLETTER IS TAKING A DAY OFF ON JULY 1ST
