The Science Behind Brain Resilience
For the INN, we understand brain resilience as a dynamic, emergent property of biological, psychosocial, and environmental systems.
Why a Multiscale, Complex Systems Approach?
Resilience isn't localized to one brain region or even one system. It emerges from interactions:
- Across scales: From molecules and cells, to circuits, to whole-body systems, and into environmental and social contexts.
- Across time: Capturing development, learning, and a lifetime of aging.
A complex system is one where many parts interact in nonlinear ways, where the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
We use a multiscale complex systems framework to explore how patterns of resilience unfold, how they can be measured, and how they can be supported across the lifespan.
