Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon Doctoral Neuroscience and Neurotechnology Award

The Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon Doctoral Neuroscience and Neurotechnology Award supports incoming PhD students whose research focuses on Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. This award reflects the shared commitment between INN and Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon to advancing dementia research that is innovative, collaborative, and accessible to all. 

This award will support research in biomedical, clinical, and/or social aspects of dementia, including:

  • causes of dementia
  • risk reduction and prevention
  • diagnostic approaches
  • treatment strategies
  • care and support

Award value:

  • $40,000 per year
  • Renewable for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory academic progress

 

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

  • be entering a full-time PhD program in any faculty at SFU during the 2026/27 academic year
  • demonstrate academic excellence and/or professional achievement
  • demonstrate an established interest in dementia-related research areas

 

Application requirements:

Applicants must submit:

  1. An unofficial transcript from their current or most recent degree program,
  2. One letter of reference from a faculty member or employer familiar with the applicant’s achievements, and
  3. A research proposal outlining the applicant’s research on the causes of dementia, risk reduction and treatment, diagnostic methods or treatment, and care or support. The proposal must:
    • include:
      • The project title and supervisor,
      • A clear description of the research question(s), objective(s) and methology, and
      • A description of the applicant's role on the project
    • adhere to the following formatting requirements:
      • maximum 1 page proposal, single-spaced, letter-sized
      • minimum margins: 2 cm (0.79 in)
      • Times New Roman font, minimum 12 pt
      • graphs and images may be included but must fit inside the 1-page limit
      • references may be included as a separate page

Other terms

  • This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by SFU or external agencies, where permitted by those agencies
  • The scholarship will be granted by the Dean and Vice Provost of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Director, Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology or their designate
  • If a suitable candidate is not identified, the scholarship may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete an annual progress report for the duration of their award and may be invited to participate in an annual research luncheon hosted by the Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon
