COURSE DETAILS:

Title: Glaciological Applications of SAR Interferometry  

The Directed Readings will cover the basic foundations of (polarimetric) SAR and Interferometric SAR (InSAR) in how far they are relevant to glacier applications (mass balance and ice dynamics).  We will work through the key processing steps to focus SAR raw data. This will be followed by a short summary of Pol-SAR as relevant to glacioloy. Next we will discuss and demonstrate processing techniques of interferometric SAR image pairs and time series to isolate ice surface displacement from the InSAR phase. The latter includes corrections due to sensor motion, geometric-topgraphic, and atmospheric water vapor among others. A side focus will be on SAR speckle/feature tracking as a 2D-vector low resolution alternative to measure ice motion (InSAR derived surface displacement are 1D only, projection in line-of-sight). Finally we will cover 3d ice velocity vector decompositions  using multiple SAR geometries including a thorough discussion of constraints and caveats.
