Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Introduction to the study of Mandarin Chinese and to the development of basic oral and written skills for those with no background in Mandarin. Students will study phonetics, vocabulary, syntax, grammar and culture.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course aims to develop basic oral and written skills in Mandarin Chinese through the study of vocabulary, grammar, and culture. Students will learn Mandarin pronunciation and basic Chinese sentence structures. Students will develop communication skills on everyday situations in the Canadian context: greetings, requests, studies, plans, activities etc. Components of Chinese characters and about 120 Chinese characters will be taught.  Students will learn to talk and write about themselves in Chinese.   

PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to be available for the set scheduled class times for online classes and activities. This course will be taught remotely using different modes of instruction. Instruction will be online at the scheduled class times, supported by activities and assignments that will be completed outside of the scheduled class times.

STUDENT SUITABILITY FOR THIS COURSE

CHIN 100 is designed for learners with no background or prior experience in Mandarin Chinese who will learn Mandarin as a foreign language. Students who are unsure about their level or background should consult the course instructor before they register: billie@sfu.ca

It is the students' RESPONSIBILITY to notify the instructor immediately if they find the course level not appropriate for them. To avoid financial penalties, students should take action in a timely fashion. The Department of World Languages & Literatures reserves the right to transfer students to more proficiency-appropriate courses or to deregister students when there is no appropriate course for them.

NOTES:

CHIN 100 may be applied towards the Chinese Certificate and the Asia Canada Minor.  

Please note that classes start in week one and all students are expected to attend.

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2020

Teaching at SFU in fall 2020 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
