Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Introduces basics of text analysis through Python programming. Core concepts include: data capture and manipulation; data cleaning and preprocessing; database management; big data; natural language processing; introductory machine learning; text classification. Students with credit for SDA 250 may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

The course provides an introduction to Python through several packages for data analysis. No programming experience is required.

MODE OF INSTRUCTION:
The course will take place remotely. It will delivered through a blend of synchronous and asynchronous methods. All of the
lectures will be pre-recorded and available for viewing asynchronously. Some of the class components, especially labs, may
take place at fixed times throughout the semester, with 1-2 hours per week of synchronous delivery.

Block assigned for synchronous teaching (may not happen every week): Wednesdays 10:30 am – 12:20 pm.

The instructor will also hold drop-in office hours on Zoom or Canvas.

Grading

  • Lab exercises, in class 20%
  • Assignments 40%
  • Take-home exams 40%

Please note that a grade of “FD” (Failed-Dishonesty) may be assigned as a penalty for academic dishonesty.

None. Reading materials and slides will be made available on Canvas. Most of the material will be drawn from open sources.

TEACHING AT SFU IN SPRING 2021

Teaching at SFU in spring 2021 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
