Special Topics in Sustainable Energy Engineering.

COURSE DETAILS:

For Fall 2023: SEE894 G100 is focused on understanding and analyzing sustainable vehicle technologies. The course will include an introduction to current and future vehicle propulsion systems and provide the tools and understanding to assess vehicle performance using different propulsion technologies. The environmental impacts and life cycle energy use of current and future vehicle motive power technologies will be investigated.

Assessment will be a combination of assignments and project work using industry-standard modelling tools. The course includes a weekly 1 hr tutorial for training and guided practic in using the software modelling tools. Attendance at the tutorial session is optional.

This offering of the course will include a special focus topic (~4 weeks) on battery management systems for electrified vehicles, delivered by industry expert Dr. Ania Mitros.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Explain the factors influencing propulsion system selection for different on-road vehicle applications
- Quantify propulsion system performance over a defined vehicle driving cycle
- Compare and contrast alternative vehicle propulsion systems for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions
- Design a propulsion system architecture for a selected vehicle application using industry-standard software
- Interpret the role and identify critical performance characteristics of a battery management system for electrified vehicle

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity website http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating. Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the university community. Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the university. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the university. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html

RELIGIOUS ACCOMMODATION

Students with a faith background who may need accommodations during the semester are encouraged to assess their needs as soon as possible and review the Multifaith religious accommodations website. The page outlines ways they begin working toward an accommodation and ensure solutions can be reached in a timely fashion.
