CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Participants will discuss methodological approaches in sociolinguistic research in educational and other social contexts. Course instructors will introduce a range of sociolinguistic research following different methodologies, as well as presenting their own research. Participants will be involved in discussions and analysis in three areas: analysis of data from instructors' research; applicability of methodologies in participants' own social and educational contexts; relevance and applicability of methodologies in terms of participants' emerging research plans.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

In this course, participants will:

  • Develop a critical awareness of the ontological and epistemological assumptions of current methodological approaches in sociocultural/sociolinguistic research in educational and other social contexts
  • Select and adapt research methodological approaches that can best address the research questions in their emerging research plan
  • Explain the strengths and limitations of the research methodologies that they have chosen for their emerging research plan

Course participants will be expected to:

  1. Participate in all course sessions and activities,
  2. Complete assigned weekly readings from selected sources,
  3. Work in collaborative groups to explore readings and assignments.

Grading

  • "Working/In-Process" draft (of final methodology paper) 30%
  • Peer Feedback (of final methodology paper) 25%
  • Final methodology paper 45%
