Gerardo Otero was the 2021/2022 president of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), and organized its 40th congress held virtually on May 5-8, 2022. Its central theme was: "Socioenvironmental polarization and rivalry among great powers." See LASA's website. In 2021, Otero was elected fellow to Academy II (Social Sciences) of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). See 30 seconds video here.

At Simon Fraser University, Otero is a Professor Emeritus at the School for International Studies and was an associated faculty member of the Labour Studies Program. In Fall 2024, Otero received the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences' Dean's Medal for Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in research, teaching and service. In Vancouver, Otero is a founding member of the British Columbia Employment Standards Coalition.
