Displacement involves the movement of an individual or a group of people against their will. Displacement in Vancouver is a significant driver of change, as housing costs have consistently been on the rise throughout the past decade. As a result, many local Vancouverites have been forced out of their homes and into provinces such as Alberta or Ontario for affordability, in addition to many others being forced onto the streets.
What is driving this change in population composition and affordability in Vancouver due to displacement is gentrification. The gentrification of previously affordable spaces of Vancouver has lead to the displacement of lower-class communities. How this may impact Vancouver, is the outcome of increased homelessness in the city as gentrification transforms affordable living spaces into inaffordable to most.
Homelessness in Vancouver has been a prevalent issue for a while, but with the increased gentrification of parts of the city such as Chinatown, individuals and families that have called Vancouver home for generations are now displaced.
As a result of the past and continued gentrification of parts of the city of Vancouver such as Chinatown, East Hastings, and Gastown, many have been rendered homeless, as many cannot afford anywhere else.
Our response is to educate the general population of the city of Vancouver on the drivers of change as much as we can. Through our pop-up established in the city, we hope to draw consumers to our products and ultimately our message on the drivers of change.
