Board of Governors
The Board of Governors is Simon Fraser University’s senior governing body, established under the University Act.
SFU operates under a bicameral governance structure consisting of the Senate and the Board of Governors. The Board is responsible for the business affairs of the university: overseeing property, financial stewardship and institutional policies, as well as holding the President accountable for the effective leadership and administration of the institution. Senate oversees academic governance.
The Board is composed of 15 members: the Chancellor, the President, two elected faculty members, two elected students, one elected staff member and eight members appointed by the Government of British Columbia. Board members volunteer their time and receive no remuneration for their service.
In fulfilling their mandate, Board members bring diverse expertise and perspectives from across sectors. They play a critical role in providing strategic guidance and thoughtful oversight on key initiatives put forward by the university to help ensure SFU’s long‑term success, accountability and alignment with its mission and values.
The Board meets six times per year. Meeting dates and times are available in the published schedule, and the open session portions of each meeting are accessible to the public.
