Every year, the School of Computing Science recognizes Grade 11 students who are outstanding in Mathematics and demonstrate an aptitude in Computing Science. This year, the achievements of these students were celebrated on Wednesday, June 20th on the Burnaby mountain campus of Simon Fraser University. Proud parents of the students accompanied them to the Evening Reception that had a celebratory as well as educational component.

The evening started off with Dr. Uwe Glässer, Director of Computing Science congratulating the award winners and speaking on the significance of Mathematics in Computing Science. Keeping in mind the apprehensions of parents and students thinking of getting onto university to pursue post-secondary education, Mrs. Margo Leight, Undergraduate Advisor and Student Recruiter at the School of Computing Science, addressed parents’ concerns about helping their children in their career choices. Mr. Harinder S. Khangura, Lecturer at Simon Fraser University, presented on topic discussion: “Trust and Privacy Issues online” to students.

Though the High Tech Computing industry is advancing in leaps and bounds and the need for Computing Science graduates is increasing, parents are still wary of their children choosing Computing Science as their career focus. Dispelling the myth that the high tech industry continues to struggle since the dot.com bust, and providing first hand knowledge of the Computing Science Industry’s current and future trends, Mr. Sameer Sharma, Applications Consultant at IBM presented to parents and students.  Mr. Sharma covered areas such as IBM projects, local and international talent, women in IT, statistics and future trends of the Computing industry.

The presentations and event were an excellent opportunity for guests and award recipients to gain an insight into the field of Computing Science, visit Simon Fraser University and meet the faculty. The Evening ended on a celebratory note applauding the Math 11 Excellence award winners and their achievements.

Congratulations to the winners!
