Syllabus

The program consists of six modules, one final assignment and a final project, all of which must be completed in order to obtain the certificate.

 

Module 1: Designing Online Learning. Participants will learn the basic features of the system used to deliver the Certificate in Web-Based Instruction and complete a needs assessment for their online module.

 

Module 2: Learning Theories. This module will introduce learning theories and their impact on the instructional design of online classrooms.

 

Module 3: Authoring and Administrative Tools. Participants will learn about authoring tools to create online content for classroom teaching and management.

 

Module 4: Techniques for Online Communication. Participants will focus on the skills needed to facilitate communication and learning in the online classroom. Thie module will cover the role of the instructor in online environments, netiquette, and student support mechanisms.

 

Module 5: Student Assessment. In this module, participants will study online assessment and evaluation methods. Various approaches will be examined and web-based testing programs, online grade books, and usage statistics packages will be introduced.

 

Module 6: Formative and Summative Evaluation. In this module, participants discuss practical issues in the implementation of their courses and determine their preferred approach(es) to course evaluation.

 

Final Project: Review of the Literature. Participants will conduct a research study on the web and will present their results to the class in the form of a review of the literature.

 

Final Project: Online Module. Participants will produce one online module similar in length to one of the CWI program modules; i.e., a module involving a maximum of ten hours of learning activities.
