Play Deserts

In order to assess the distribution of play deserts within the study area, the lowest quintile of playability scores from the play deserts MCE was overlayed on a map of the City of Vancouver. This map answers the overarching objective of this project: In which areas of Vancouver do play deserts exist?

The separation of play deserts and oases from the other varying degrees of playability allows for further investigation of how much of the study area is encompassed in each. Tables 1 and 2 show the statistical examination of the total area covered in the eastern neighbourhoods and the western neighbourhoods by each phenomenon. Table 1 shows the total area of both the East and West sides of Vancouver, as well as the total area of both play deserts and play oases within them.

Table 1
East Area () West Area ()
Oases 16.66 7.46
Deserts 9.78 11.05
Total 58.96 53.31

The total area of play deserts and play oases was compared to the total area of each half of the city in order to quantify the overall coverage. Table 2 shows that there is a higher percentage of play oases in the East side of Vancouver than the West side, as well as a lower percentage of play desert than in the West side.

Table 2
  East West
Oasis 28.26% 13.99%
Deserts 16.59% 20.73%

While identifying play oases was not an objective of this project, it was made possible through the analyses performed. In order to substantiate the tables included above. The following interactive play oasis map has been included to offer a visual comparison of distribution of play deserts and play oases.
