Geography News:

Welcome to Geography

Geography is a core environmental discipline that focuses on human societies and the built environment; the earth’s biogeophysical environments; and the ever more complex interactions that exist between these two. Interdisciplinary in nature, Geography brings together knowledge, theory and methods from the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities.  Geography is age-old: it flourished as an early science in early Greek civilization and was central to the European Voyages of Discovery that mapped the world. But you will find Geography is strategically placed to confront the challenges that beset us in the 21st century, for example, those related to environmental issues, resource use, abuse and management, urban and regional development and planning, globalization and its local impacts, and other vital topics. Geography has strong intellectual connections with many other departments in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Applied Science, Education, Business Administration and Health Sciences. If you wish to develop an integrated understanding of physical and human environments and their interactions then Geography is for you!

Geography is proud of its role as a founding Department of the University and the Faculty of Arts in 1965. We are now proud to be a founding unit of the new Faculty of Environment at its creation in April 2009.
