This week, the SNF New Media Lab welcomed three new interns to Simon Fraser University as part of the Rebooting the Greek Language project. The project is made possible through a significant grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. It brings together revolutionary pedagogy with cutting-edge mobile technologies to the preservation of the Greek Language in the Diaspora. At the core of the project is a paid internship program split between Athens and Vancouver, which gives young computer science graduates from Greece training in technology and entrepreneurship.

Our three new interns have already begun making significant contributions to the project. Marina Apostoli has a degree in the Classics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and is working towards a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Hellenic Open University. Marina also has a background in teaching Modern Greek to middle and high school students and has been working on scripting and storyboarding. Irene Vlachopanagioti is participating in the project as a content developer. She has a degree from the School of Philosophy in the Classics, from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and since 2017 has been studying Archaeology and Art History. Her interests lie primarily in teaching Modern Greek, Ancient Greek, and Latin, as well as studying prehistoric civilizations from around the world. Finally, Magda Candiliari is a graphic designer who has been working on storyboarding for the project.

We’re thrilled to be able to involve talented young people from Greece on this project. Thanks to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation we can make a real difference in these people’s lives and showcase what Greece has to offer, while helping the Greek language in the Diaspora at the same time. It’s a win-win.

The interns spent the first week of the Canadian leg of their internship working in the Lab at SFU’s Burnaby campus and have also taken part in a workshop at the Museum of Vancouver. Next week, their work will take them to our mentorship partners at SFU’s VentureLabs, a world-class business accelerator located in downtown Vancouver. Once back in Greece, they will continue working on the project for the remainder of their internships through the Lab’s distributed work environment, gaining valuable experience and expertise along the way.
