FIRST MONTH REFLECTIONS WITH SFU'S

NEW VPPEI

To say it’s been a whirlwind is an understatement for new VP People, Equity and Inclusion Yabome Gilpin-Jackson as she settles into her new role at the university. She’s keeping the big picture top of mind to identify emerging goals and priorities for the PEI portfolio at SFU and will collectively help us make steady progress towards the transformational changes for the people at SFU and for equity and inclusion at the university.

JUNE IS PRIDE MONTH

For the LGBTQIA2S+ community, Pride is a chance to reflect on the past, look forward to the future and join in celebration. SFU has a responsibility to create a welcoming place for all LGBTQIA2S+ members of the SFU community. If you need support, please reach out or visit the EDI resource library to access supports and toolkits. For those interested in becoming an effective ally, SFU employees have access to free webinars through the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion and can learn to advance LGBTQIA2S+ inclusion through Pride at Work Canada.

Master of Public Health student Reilla Archibald co-wrote a report identifying the barriers that survivors of conversion therapy in Canada experience. Learn how the SOGIECE/CT Survivors Support Project's interviews, surveys and focus groups played a role in finding four categories of support and action for those affected.

The June 4, 1989 massacre in Beijing, China is often referred to through a western-centric lens as China’s Democracy Movement, with an emphasis on whether the violent suppression of protestors was necessary. SFU History professor Jeremy Brown wants to change that. Learn how Brown's book, June Fourth: The Tiananmen Protests and Beijing Massacre of 1989 sheds new light on what happened and why.
