Prerequisites:Any 100 division CRIM course is recommended.
An introduction to criminological research that is intended to develop the student's research and analytical skills. Specifically, the course will focus on the theory of inquiry, the logic, and structure of criminological inquiry, research design, data gathering, analysis and reporting. Students with credit for CRIM 120 may not take CRIM 220 for further credit. Quantitative.
This course will explore the use and application of different research methods in the context of criminological scholarship. The course is intended to introduce students to the basic principles of methods as well as help them to apply such methods to understanding real-world problems. Topics will include the theory and practice of social science research, research design, research ethics, sampling techniques, data analysis, and the relevance of research for public policy. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to actively engage with the material in applied environments in order to enhance their comprehension of the material and sharpen their analytical skills. For example, students will participate in online discussions, respond to questions using class polls, and evaluate popular media’s claims about research studies. Students will also have the opportunity to hear from researchers using the methods discussed in the course as part of a series of interviews with guest speakers. Course comprehension will be measured via multiple methods of assessment, including exams, papers, and tutorial participation.
This course will be delivered via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous techniques. Lectures will be conducted synchronously during the scheduled class time. Tutorials will be conducted asynchronously.

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2020
Teaching at SFU in fall 2020 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams.
