CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Explores diversity in cities. It examines how different social and identity markers (ethnicity, religion, race, gender, class, sexuality, handicap or language) shape cities and how diversity is in turn shaped by public policies. The primary focus is Canada but we also look at these issues outside Canada. Students who have taken Selected Topics course POL 458 with the topic "Canadian DiverCities" may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course explores the diversity of Canadian cities. It looks at how different identity and social markers (for instance ethnicity, religion, race, gender, class, sexuality, disability and language) shape Canadian cities and how diversity is in turn shaped by public policies. Comparative material may be used to complement the Canadian focus.

  • Participation 10%
  • Mid-term exam 20%
  • Oral presentation 20%
  • Written assignments (See Notes below) 50%

NOTES:

Written assingments (50%):

  • Journal entry (600-700 words) = 5%
  • Presentation worksheet (500-700 words each) = 20%
  • Essay (2000-2500 words) = 25%

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2020

Teaching at SFU in fall 2020 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
