Explores how sociologists and anthropologists investigate social relations and contexts. Students learn to develop research questions and turn them into research projects. Introduces data collection techniques and related ethical issues, the relationship between theory and research, and other fundamental concepts and issues involved in conducting qualitative and quantitative research. Quantitative.
In this course students will be introduced to the research methodologies commonly employed in the social sciences. During the term, students will learn introductory training in research design, data collection, and data analysis.
Through the exploration of various research designs and approaches, the course will emphasize principles of causality, conceptualization, measurement and sampling. Additionally, students will be exposed to the practical aspects of investigative design within the larger context of conducting research. As such, we will be exploring multiple aspects of research including how to formulate a research project through the creation of research questions, the operationalization of variables and concepts, addressing ethical issues and the collection and analysis of data, ethnography, and survey research.
In order to complete course assignments, students will be required to conduct independent research outside the classroom. Assignments in the course include developing your own survey, analyzing existing survey data, conducting ethnographic observations, and collecting in-depth interview data. By the end of the course, students will be better prepared to conduct social sciences research, as well as, evaluate existing research and data.

Grading: Where a final exam is scheduled and the student does not write the exam or withdraw from the course before the deadline date, an N grade will be assigned. Unless otherwise specified on the course syllabus, all graded assignments for this course must be completed for a final grade other than N to be assigned. An N is considered as an F for the purposes of scholastic standing.

TEACHING AT SFU IN FALL 2021
Teaching at SFU in fall 2021 will involve primarily in-person instruction, with approximately 70 to 80 per cent of classes in person/on campus, with safety plans in place. Whether your course will be in-person or through remote methods will be clearly identified in the schedule of classes. You will also know at enrollment whether remote course components will be “live” (synchronous) or at your own pace (asynchronous).
Enrolling in a course acknowledges that you are able to attend in whatever format is required. You should not enroll in a course that is in-person if you are not able to return to campus, and should be aware that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes.
