Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to the field of special education including studies of the definitional criteria and characteristics of major categories of special need, and the distinctive instructional challenges associated with these categories. The course focuses on the special learning needs of school age students, both elementary and secondary school levels, and emphasizes both the analysis of issues and treatment needs across the array of special needs.

COURSE DETAILS:

The course will be mainly be asynchronous, where weekly activities are self-paced and we do not meet for "class".  We will have 2 synchronous sessions (2 guest lectures) that students are expected to attend.

 

 

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

  1. Understand key concepts in inclusive education
  2. Identify the characteristics and learning needs of a range of exceptionalities recognized in Canadian schools.
  3. Understand the most commonly used approaches for identifying, describing, and supporting exceptional learners.
  4. Apply knowledge of inclusive practices and individualized supports for students with exceptionalities.
  5. Critically reflect on their own attitudes and beliefs about including students with special needs in the classroom

NOTES:

Criminal Records Check not required for this section.

REQUIREMENTS:

A mandatory, ungraded Library Plagiarism tutorial will be held in Week 2.

Students will need to be able to connect to the Internet to access Canvas, and must have access to a word processor for writing up papers and assignments.

TEACHING AT SFU IN SPRING 2021

Teaching at SFU in spring 2021 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
