Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An overview of culture history and methodological/theoretical issues for a specific region of the world. Variable units: 3, 4, 5.

COURSE DETAILS:

Over the next 6 weeks, we will go back in time and take a take a walk through Medieval Europe, covering the period that goes from the fall of the Roman Empire to
approximately the year 1000 AD. Together, we will learn that while the Middle Ages are often misunderstood as a time solely characterized by knights and castles (and dragons?!), they were actually a complex period marked by profound changes, great cultural diversity, significant sociopolitical shifts, and skilled craftsmanship.
In this course we will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, drawing primarily upon archaeology (artifacts and architecture) but also from historical and primary sources, to get a comprehensive understanding of the Middle Ages. The ultimate goal of this course is to empower you to engage thoughtfully with the past, develop critical thinking skills, and form well-informed perspectives on Medieval Europe.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity website http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating. Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the university community. Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the university. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the university. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
