SFU sets the pace for spin-off companies

SFU is recognized as the North American leader for knowledge transfer through the formation of spin-off companies to commercialize technologies developed in the university’s research labs.

Analysis of annual surveys conducted by the Association of University Technology Managers indicates that SFU leads Canadian – and, in most years, North American – universities in the number of spin-off companies formed per million dollars of research expenditure. Since SFU opened in 1965, our researchers have established 66 spin-off companies, of which 44 are still active.

Canadian universities are considered an important source of new technologies and knowledge transfer. And with the emergence of the global economy, the formation and growth of knowledge-based industries is viewed as critical to economic success.
