SFU sets the pace for spin-off companies
SFU is recognized as the North American leader for knowledge transfer through the formation of spin-off companies to commercialize technologies developed in the university’s research labs. Analysis of annual surveys conducted by the Association of University Technology Managers indicates that SFU leads Canadian – and, in most years, North American – universities in the number of spin-off companies formed per million dollars of research expenditure. Since SFU opened in 1965, our researchers have established 66 spin-off companies, of which 44 are still active. Canadian universities are considered an important source of new technologies and knowledge transfer.
