Underwater lab makes waves

New sonar technology developed at SFU’s underwater research laboratory is making waves. The sonar enables high-resolution, 3-D underwater acoustic mapping and imaging of the seabed.

John Bird, a professor of engineering science and director of the lab, began developing the new technology several years ago while working on a project where the existing technology was too large and cumbersome. “The only sonars available were multi-beams, and they were too big,” Bird says. Together with former doctoral student Paul Kraeutner, Bird set about developing their concept for a smaller three-dimensional system that would provide both depth and imagery for seabed mapping.

SFU holds the patent on the technology, which is now being licensed and marketed by a sub-sea company.
