Simon Fraser University is thinking of the world
Our leadership group is staffed by public safety professionals, all graduates of a Canadian law enforcement academy and each with several years of experience in the law enforcement and/or high-level corporate security industry. We strongly encourage professional development, and many of our members have achieved nationally and internationally recognized credentials in the protection services environment. All members of the Campus Security team, whether they are in-house Patrol Supervisors, contract security officers or members of our Campus Student Safety Program, are extremely dedicated and knowledgeable, and stand ready to respond to the public safety and security needs of our community. Campus Security's role is critical to the mission of ensuring a safe and secure work and learning environment at SFU, but we are only a few in a community of thousands. We are proud of the strong partnerships we have formed within the campus population, and we encourage our community members to take ownership of security and safety initiatives in their own work spaces to help us keep the community safe and secure. Check our web site for valuable crime prevention information, or simply telephone or email our department for information and advice on how to establish a crime prevention or personal safety program in your work place. Campus Security is of the community, for the community, and we are there for you.

For support in developing personal safety plans for your area or other related safety matters please contact Laura MacDonald of Campus Security at 25450, laura_macdonald@sfu.ca. How Should Our Staff Deal With Difficult Individuals? On occasion, staff members may be required to interact with difficult individuals, who appear to be threatening or intimidating through their words or actions. In some cases this behaviour causes a staff member to feel that their safety or the safety of others is at risk. If a staff member is faced with what they deem to be a potentially threatening situation, there are some basic actions that should be adopted to manage the situation as best as possible pending assistance from Campus Security or others. Specifically, if someone is angry or hostile, or threatening, the staff member should: · Stay calm and listen attentively and respectfully · Maintain eye contact and safe distance · Be courteous and patient · Try to provide options to deal with their situation · Disengage if the situation escalates · If possible, discreetly signal a co-worker or a supervisor that you need help. Fellow staff members who observe a co-worker in a threatening situation should call Campus Security immediately at 2-4500 from a location where the call will not further agitate the difficult person All occurrences of threatening behavior should be reported to Campus Security immediately. All areas should have departmental safety plans specific to their physical space, staffing resources, and level of interaction with the community. A departmental safety plan identifies egress routes, safe locations, options to deal with the top five issues dealt with at the front-line client service area, and emergency contact numbers. Supervisors should ensure that staff is familiar with the safety plan. Campus Security provides training on personal safety and related issues in the workplace, and would be pleased to provide in-house sessions on personal safety and dealing with difficult individuals for all staff. Please contact Laura MacDonald in Campus Security 2-5450 or email laura_macdonald@sfu.ca to arrange a training session for staff, for an assessment of safety issues related to departmental physical space, to create departmental safety plans, or to consult on any other related personal safety issues. Parking Announcement Effective Monday 01 November 2010, Parking Services became a component of SFU Ancillary Services. Campus Security will continue to support Parking Services as a community partner by continuing to provide parking enforcement and roadway safety activities, however the administration and business functions related to campus parking is now the responsibility of Parking Services as a separate unit under Ancillary Services. Any comments or concerns regarding parking matters should be brought to the attention of David Agosti (daagosti@sfu.ca / local 25914)..

And Campus Security is thinking of the safety and security of our University community, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. While we protect the University's resources, the community should know that Campus Security is a resource that is available to them anytime they are on campus. From helping jump start cars to conducting physical security audits of work areas, investigating crimes to conducting Safe Walk services, Campus Security is the University's public safety and first response entity.
