SFU’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies visits Greece

In November of 2012 a delegation from SFU’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Hellenic Studies, lead by Dr. John Craig (Dean, Arts and Social Sciences) and Dr. Andre Gerolymatos (Director, SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies), traveled to Athens, Greece for a series of official meetings with state representatives so as to present and discuss new initiatives and the innovative technology developed at the SNF Centre. Among the highlights of the SFU team’s visit to Athens, was to update the President on the progress of the Hellenic Studies programs and future plans for teaching Greek language and culture.  Joining Dr. John Craig and Dr. Andre Gerolymatos were Dr. Dimitris Krallis, Mr. Costa Dedegikas and Dr. Eirini Kotsovili.

The SFU delegation meets with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias to update him on the progress of the various Hellenic Studies intiatives and future plans for teaching Greek language and culture.

On Tuesday November 27, our Dean of Arts and Social Sciences Prof. John Craig addressed the Standing Committee on Cultural & Educational Affairs and the Special Permanent Committee on Greeks Abroad  (Senate Room, Greek Parliament). In his speech, he presented the progress made at the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies, SFU and the continuous efforts made with regards to preserving the Greek language and culture. On Wednesday, November 28 Dr. John Craig (Dean FASS), Mr. Costa Dedegikas (Technology Manager, SNF New Media Lab) and Mr. Konstantinos Kontos (iOS Engineer, SNF New Media Lab) presented a new initative with the Ministry of Tourism called Amazing Athens. Simon Fraser University is playing a unique role in helping Greece revive its tourism market through technology. This is the first of a series of iPad apps that help promote Athens as much more than a stop-over to the islands. It will showcase Athens in the best possible way by educating tourists about the amazing things that Athens can offer.

On Thursday, November 29, 2012 another meeting took place in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to help the Centre develop closer links with the Universities of Athens, Patras, Iaonnina, and Peloponnese, in order to develop an online program for the training of Greek Language teachers for North America and China.
