Nick Kravariotis Memorial Endowment Fund supporting the Nick Kravariotis Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Hellenic Studies
The Nick Kravariotis Memorial Endowment Fund was established in 1998 by family, friends and colleagues of Nick Kravariotis. The Endowment supports the Nick Kravariotis Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Hellenic Studies.
Nick Kravariotis was born in Patras, Greece in 1934 and emigrated to Canada in 1964. He died in 1997, leaving his wife, Voula, and their three children, Steven, Vicky and Tom. During his last 24 years in Vancouver, Nick established a small ship chandelling company, United Maritime Suppliers, which became one of the largest ship suppliers in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. Nick will be remembered not only as one of the most prominent and respected businessmen in his field, but as a loving family man and friend.
The Nick Kravariotis Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Hellenic Studies valued at a portion of the interest earned on the Endowment, will be awarded annually in the Fall term. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students who are enrolled in the Hellenic Studies Graduate Program at Simon Fraser University. Preference will be given to students in the fields covered by Hellenic History from Byzantium to the modern period. Should no students qualify, the scholarship will be open to students working towards the Hellenic Studies Certificate.
Charalambos (Harry) & Helene Katevatis Graduate Scholarship Endowment Fund supporting the Katevatis Graduate Scholarship in Hellenic Studies
The Charalambos (Harry) and Helene Katevatis Graduate Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2009 through generous donations from Harry and Helene Katevatis and matching funds from the Burnaby Mountain Endowment Fund Matching Program.
The purpose of the Katevatis Graduate Scholarship in Hellenic Studies is to promote knowledge and understanding regarding Hellenism, including Greek history, language, and literature, by providing financial support to graduate students whose research focuses on some aspect of this topic.
Scholarships will be awarded annually from a portion of the income earned from the Endowment Fund. The balance of earned interest will be reinvested in the Endowment to protect its value over time. When endowment income permits, multiple awards may be made.
The Ted and Emily McWhinney Scholarship in International Studies
The Ted and Emily McWhinney Scholarship in International Studies will be awarded annually to 4th year or graduating undergraduate students enrolled in the International Studies Program on the basis of outstanding academic achievement in course work and research.
One scholarship will be given to a student whose academic excellence is related to course work and research focused on Greece and the Balkans, from the 20th century forward and the second scholarship will be given to a student whose academic excellence is related to course work and research focused on India, from the establishment of the Republic of India in 1947 on.
The award will be made by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee based upon the nomination of the Chair, Hellenic Studies and the Director, School of International Studies.
