About laila

Laila holds a Ph.D. in life sciences, specializing in plant breeding, and a master's degree in plant biology from Paris University, France. With over 20 years of experience as a scientific consultant in biotechnology, agri-food, and natural health products industries, she has forged strong connections with BC companies, government agencies, and post-secondary institutions, driving innovation, sustainability, and market competitiveness. As the former Director of Innovation and Technology at BCCAI, Laila played a crucial role in supporting the launch of the BC Centre for Agritech Innovation program by closely collaborating with SFU’s Partnership Hub team and engaging key stakeholders. From 2020 to 2022, she oversaw the creation of an Agritech undergraduate program at SFU and actively supported the establishment of BCCAI alongside Dr. Sylvain Moreno and SPH. Driven by a passion for addressing the environmental impact of climate change on agriculture, Laila is committed to exploring diverse adaptation strategies and collaborating with researchers, companies, and farmers to promote regenerative and organic agriculture. Additionally, she is dedicated to support the integration of First Nations' traditional knowledge to enhance local food production in remote regions. As an active member of BCCAI, Laila's mission is to contribute positively to society, the environment, and sustainable food production.

"I am motivated to contribute positively to society and the environment through sustainable food production. BCCAI provides an opportunity to address climate change's impact on agriculture and explore innovative adaptation strategies. My goal is to promote eco-friendly practices, support biodiversity, and collaborate with researchers, SMEs, and farmers to address the long-term environmental and social sustainability of our agri-food system."
