Biographies

Jean-Philippe Antoine is Emeritus Professor of History and Theory of Contemporary Art at Paris 8 University. His research bears on images and the social construction of Memory, as well as on modern definitions of art. He has written about artists such as Joseph Beuys, Mike Kelley, Marcel Broodthaers, Gerhard Richter, Morgan Fisher and theorists such as Stanley Cavell, George Kubler, and Gabriel Tarde. As an artist, he works with painting, installations, sound works, and lectures-performances. His sound publications include: Nouvelles musiques anciennes (2011); Oui (2017); Moi qui fais profession des choses muettes, (2023), all @ Fireworkedition Records.

Brady Cranfield is a sound and visual artist, musician, and writer. He is currently also a PhD student at the SCA.

Eldritch Priest is a composer and improviser. His compositions, which have been performed in North America and Europe, are characterized by their ob/excessive approach to melody (not in a systematic sense, but in the sense that they don’t stop and tend towards the absurd). His improvisational work, while informed by his compositional practice, lies somewhere closer to contemporary and free jazz. Along with John Mark Sherlock, he co-founded the now defunct Toronto-based experimental music collective Neither/Nor, which in the early oughts commissioned and performed works by an international array of musician-composers. Priest is also an active member of Vancouver’s improvisation and experimental jazz community. He is one half of Alfred Jarry, an improvising duo that takes its name from the inventor of ’pataphysics—“the science of imaginary solutions”—and a member of the trio Raymond Roussel (another French poet of the absurd). Priest is also Associate Professor of Contemporary Art at Simon Fraser University, where he teaches idleness and dreaming and writes on sonic culture, experimental aesthetics, and the philosophy of experience. He is the author of several essays and books including Boring Formless Nonsense: Experimental Music and the Aesthetics of Failure(Bloomsbury, 2013), Earworm and Event: Music, Daydreams, and Other Imaginary Refrains (Duke University Press, 2022), and most recently, Null Cipher Suite (Noxious Sector Press, 2026).
