Biography
Ursula Johnson has exhibited work nationally and internationally since graduating from NSCAD in 2006. Johnson describes her work as “changing mediums based on who I am talking to and what conversation I am trying to have”. A major focus of her practice is based in performance and installation. Much of her work employs cooperative didactic intervention and is place-based while incorporating various mediums and often collaboration with others.
Ursula has also been collaborating with her spouse, Angella Parsons under the collaborative duo KINUK. Johnson and Parsons have created works that explore notions of public versus private within the scope of the interpersonal nature of their relationship and cultural difference and sameness.
Johnson has been shortlisted for the Salt Spring National Art Prize (2015) and the Nova Scotia Masterworks Award (2016). She was a recipient of the Hnatyshyn Foundation Reveal Indigenous Art Award (2016) and winner of the 2017 Sobey Art Award. Johnson’s work Moose Fence won the 2019 NS Masterworks Award.
About AVAIR
The Audain Visual Artist in Residence (AVAIR) and the School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA) are pleased to present the Spring 2021 Visual Art Forum, a term-long series of free online public lectures by a diverse group of leading contemporary artists and thinkers. The Visual Art Forum is presented as part of the SCA’s AVAIR program and forms a central element of our studio and seminar classes.
In response to COVID-19, all AVAIR participants will be presenting lectures, conducting studio visits, and interacting with students and faculty of the SCA online. Members of the visual arts and cultural communities and the general public are invited to watch the main lecture series.
The Audain Visual Artist in Residence program brings artists and practitioners to Vancouver who have contributed significantly to the field of contemporary art and whose work resonates with local and international visual art discourses. The visiting artists interact with the students and faculty of the School for the Contemporary Arts as well as the broader visual arts and cultural communities and the community-at-large. In keeping with the experimental nature of the School for the Contemporary Arts the terms of engagement are open and change from artist to artist. The cornerstone of the residency is the sharing of artistic research. The program is generously funded by the Audain Foundation Endowment Fund.
