Dr. Sara Ng

Lab Director

Dr. Ng holds a joint position in the Department of Linguistics and the Social Data Analytics Program at Simon Fraser University at the rank of Assistant Professor. Prior to joining SFU she was a Visiting Professor at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. Dr. Ng completed her Ph.D. in 2024 at the University of Washington. Her thesis is titled "Prosody in Human Communication and Machine Understanding." She also holds an M.S. in Computional Linguistics from UW, conferred 2023.

"I found a love for computational linguistics at the University of Utah, where I studied Applied Mathematics and Linguistics. Being able to use the coding skills I was developing to empiricially address linguistic problems was so exciting! I was able to start research as an undergrad under the advisement of Dr. Abigail Kaplan, and presented the undergraduate research project she advised at my first ever research conference -- the Linguistic Society of America."

Dr. Ng's interests concern prosodic analysis and computational techniques for spoken language, including:

  • Multimodal cues of turn-taking
  • Prosody in Automatic Speech Recognition
  • Acoustic phonetics
  • Signal processing techniques for assistive hearing technologies

Laurens J. Bosman

Laurens holds a joint B.Sc. in Computer Science and Linguistics as well as an M.A. in Linguistics. He currently works at SFU as a staff member in Applied Science but is interested in staying involved in linguistic research. He enjoys applying computational linguistic techniques to support linguistic research, especially in sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics. On sunny days he loves hiking and fishing and when it is raining he enjoys staying inside reading a book and listening to music.
