Celebrating the Success of Semester in Dialogue’s “Shaping Tomorrow’s Doctors” Event
The program celebrates its 20-year anniversary this year. The Centre and Semester in Dialogue staff applaud the Fall 2023 cohort for their wonderful work, and for shining a light on this important conversation.
A tenacious cohort of 17 SFU undergraduate students ranging from second year to fifth year studies, saw the culmination of their semester-long course on the future of health care, in a Final Public Dialogue held Nov 27th afternoon at the Joseph and Rosalie Segal Hall at SFU Harbour Centre.
These students facilitated a thoughtful three-hour session that brought together 60+ engaged individuals from industry, academia and the public including health care practitioners; SFU faculty, staff and students; a high school student and a community practitioner. Contributing to the warm atmosphere were words and song from Elder Sempulyan Stewart Gonzales and everyone sharing stories about positive experiences with the health care system.
This led to deeper dialogue and analysis of a set of guiding principles, specifically, how to operationalize them in the context of a new medical education system. Who do we see as our future doctors, and how do we envision our doctors and health care workers caring for us? The conversations extended past the small-group discussion activities—a testament to the event’s success in bringing together a diverse group of people around a timely topic.
