Four Faculty of Engineering Science professors receive $500k from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) for Artificial Intelligence Engineering and Visualization Lab.

This $500k awarded to the lab will accelerate new research in developing novel AI specifically novel machine learning and deep learning algorithms for making significant breakthroughs in domains such as brain health, dementia, cancer, retina health, and thereby significantly impact human health by supporting early disease diagnosis and measuring the progress of treatments and predicting future outcomes through advanced AI. With telecommunication networks slated to be upgraded to 5G shortly, providing speeds 100 times faster than the current 4G networks, there will be a new paradigm unleashed in the Internet of Things, where billions of network-connected devices will be transferring large amounts of data on mobile networks faster than current broadband networks. This grant will also accelerate new research in collaborative intelligence, to develop a new generation of AI models optimally shared between edge devices and cloud-servers, as well as multimedia compression technologies for video and audio streaming, teleconferencing, online gaming, virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR).
