Guidelines

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) program is on hold at SFU until further notice, and we are not accepting applications at this time. For any questions, please contact research_mobility@sfu.ca.

Terms and Conditions

  • Projects may request up to 5 awards per project proposal
  • Matching funds of $2,000 per award is required for each inbound and outbound award unless specified otherwise. Tri-agency grants are not eligible as matching funds. 
  • Funding must be dedicated solely as student stipend
  • Research projects must take place within 12 months from the approval date of the award

Project Requirements

  • Projects must demonstrate alignment with SFU’s research priorities as articulated in the 2016-2022 SFU Research Strategic Plan
  • Project proposals must clearly articulate:
    • Objectives, significance, research plan and proposed interaction with the student
    • Likelihood of advancing SFU’s international collaboration and research priorities, including but not limited to:
      • establishment and/or continuation of a long-term research network
      • cross-institutional publications in highly ranked research outlets
      • joint applications to other international collaboration funding tools with the international partner
    • Deliverables, in addition to the final report required by Mitacs

SFU Supervisor Eligibility

  • Must hold a faculty position at a Canadian university 
  • Must be eligible to hold Tri-Council funding and to supervise graduate students

International Collaborator Eligibility

Participating Students and Postdoctoral Fellows Eligibility:

  • Must be registered as full-time senior undergraduates, graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows at an eligible university or institution and remain as such throughout their Globalink Research Award. Postdoctoral fellows may apply if their date of graduation from a PhD program is no more than 5 years prior to the proposed start date of the research project.
  • Cannot undertake a research project at an institution in Canada where they have previously completed a degree
  • Must be the legal age of majority in Canada (18 years of age or older)
  • Must meet travel requirements for their intended Canadian destination, including visa and/or immigration requirements and associated documentation
  • Cannot hold more than one Globalink Research Award per academic lifetime

Responsibilities of the SFU supervisor

  • Adhere to SFU’s policies for visiting research students and postdoctoral fellows

  • Provide ongoing direction and research support to the student or postdoctoral fellow prior to and during the research project

  • Provide the student or postdoctoral fellow with any necessary documentation to support the visa application

  • Ensure the student or postdoctoral fellow has appropriate lab and/or office space and resources during the research project

  • Submit an exit survey and sign the final report prepared by the student or postdoctoral fellow
