SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF

Content warning: residential schools

Today, we are learning of 751 unmarked graves of Indigenous children and adults at the former Marieval Residential School. As we reflect on the lasting devastation caused by residential schools, it is important to stand by Indigenous students, faculty, staff and community members as they grieve and take action to support them.

As President Joy Johnson noted in a statement issued this afternoon, support is available through the Employee and Family Assistance Program for faculty, staff and their immediate families. As well, faculty and staff are encouraged to support students and colleagues who are navigating trauma by considering flexibility on deadlines or attendance.

Faculty and staff are invited to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class of June 2021 at our Virtual Convocation on June 24, 25, 28 and 29. CONVOCATION MEDALS HONOUR SFU'S BEST AND BRIGHTEST

Convocation is a time to celebrate SFU’s graduands for their outstanding achievements and wish them well in their future endeavours. It is also a time to recognize those students with exceptional academic records whose contributions to society have benefited the university and the wider community.

CELEBRATING THE FIRST GRADUAND FROM THE SCHOOL OF SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ENGINEERING

Graduate student Daina Baker researched 3D printing technology and developed a way to create silver wire that uses 1/3 less silver than traditional electrical wires. His ultimate goal is to become a professor to continue researching and teaching students in science.

A new SFU study suggests not all bee populations are in decline, especially in North America. While large datasets have inadvertently led to exaggerated reports on the decrease of bee populations, SFU researchers have developed more accurate modelling that shows just a five per cent drop.

There are hundreds of muscles in the human body. Skeletal muscles make up 40% of our body mass and they do the heavy lifting and generate the force and power required to move. Their strength and functionality are very important for mobility. BPK professor James Wakeling has been studying muscle function for more than 20 years; work that informs training, recovery and designing prosthetics and robotics.
