MBB Graduate Colloquium 2020

The MBB Graduate Colloquium is a day-long event comprised of poster presentations and short talks given by undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students. While this event is normally reserved for students and faculty in the department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, this year we are encouraging students and faculty from related labs in the Faculty of Science to also attend. Not only does this event allow students to share their research, but it also gives students an important opportunity to practice giving presentations and develop collaborations with other researchers and labs at SFU.

Time and Place

The MBB Graduate Colloquium 2019 will take place on Tuesday, April 14th, 2020. The MBB Graduate Colloquium will be held at the Scandinavian Community Center(6540 Thomas St, Burnaby, BC). Click here for directions

The event will tentativley run from 9am to 5pm, followed by an evening reception.

Presentations

There are three types of presentations throughout the day, each of which are judged for prizes! 

• 10-minute talks: Give a detailed presentation of your recent experiments, results and conclusions. It is recommended to limit background information to what is necessary and allow sufficient time to present experimental results. 
•  3-minute (lightning) talks: Similar to the 10-minute talks, but a more condensed version.
• Poster presentations: Present your results on a poster to members of the department. Posters may remain up for the entire day

Abstract Selection

We wish to give as many students and postdoctoral fellows as possible the opportunity to present their research. However, we may receive more submitted abstracts than we can reasonably fit in a single-day colloquium, even with the assistance of caffeine. As a result, the MBB Graduate Caucus will have all submitted abstracts ranked by faculty members and select the top candidates. Ranking will be based on the following criteria:

• Clarity of the abstract for the target audience (i.e. molecular biology and biochemistry)
• Scientific impact to the field in question
• Representation from as many labs and topics as possible
• Expected number of years until graduation (newer students have future opportunities to present)
• Number of past colloquium presentations (provide an opportunity to new students to present)

Judging and Prizes

Various faculty members and postdoctoral fellows will judge the oral and poster presentations and come to a ranked listing for each type of presentation. They will be awarded as follows:

• 10-minute Talks
  • 1st prize: Dr. Bruce Brandhorst Graduate Prize in MBB
    
  • 2nd prize: $100
  • 3rd prize: $50
• Poster Presentations
  • 1st prize: Dr. Bruce Brandhorst Graduate Prize in MBB
  • 2nd prize: $100
  • 3rd prize: $50
• 3-minute Talks
  • $50 Amazon Gift Card
    

Please note that only MBB Graduate Students are eligable to recieve the Bruce Brandhorst award.
