The Anger of Nations: Trump, Trudeau, Merkel, and Farage in an Age of Voter Rage

2017, Democracy, Summit Who Needs Canada?

What does a Trump presidency mean for Canada? We know that Canada needs the United States, but do they need us? These questions are on the minds of many as our country’s most important political and economic partner begins an unprecedented and unpredictable transition.

Join pollster Nik Nanos as he presents his latest research on how Canadian attitudes toward the United States have shifted in recent months. Laura Lynch will moderate the evening. Nanos' presentation will be followed by brief interventions from three respondents: Professor Mark Pickup (SFU Dept of Political Science) as well as Mike Meneer (Democrat) and Jeff Peterson (Republican, though not a Trump supporter) from CBC Radio's 'American Panel'. Following the presentation, we invite you to take part in a moderated discussion with Nanos on how people-driven movements in the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom have major implications for Canada’s role in the world.

This event is presented in partnership with the Centre for Public Opinion and Political Representation with the Department of Political Science at Simon Fraser University.

About Who Needs Canada?

The 150th anniversary of Confederation is a critical opportunity to think and engage on Canada’s role in the world. At the same time, global trends show a growing divergence between the values Canada upholds and events taking place outside of our borders.

In light of the possible futures before us, what role does Canada need to play on the world stage?

What risks might Canada face as a result of this shifting political landscape?

What value can Canada offer to the world?

Is Canada needed? If so, why?
